From celebrating Independence Day in schools to celebrating an Olympic medal won by an athlete, we as citizens of India show our pride in the country in many ways. While some are incredibly vocal about it, many silently work for the welfare and development of the country.
However, a recent video by filmmaker Shonali Bose will get you thinking about the true meaning of patriotism and whether we have to pass certain tests to prove our love for the country. known for films like Margarita with a Straw, The Sky is Pink and Modern Love: Mumbai, The filmmaker posted a video to narrate an incident that took place at a theater in Mumbai.
She revealed in the video that she did not stand for the national anthem, a government-mandated rule in cinemas, and was called ‘disgusting’ by fellow movie-goers. She revealed in the video that she refused to participate in acting and has never stood up for the national anthem in cinema halls for the past seven years.
He said it was unfair to play the national anthem and ‘throw nationalism down the throat’ in theaters as people came there to be entertained. “What is patriotism and what is national extremism?” Shonali Bose explains the terms in her video.

She also revealed that she hoists the Indian flag and ‘loves the national anthem’ but will not sing it in a theater as the government is ‘forcefully’ instilling a sense of patriotism. He concluded the video by reading a patriotic post by Rabindranath Tagore

The video caught the attention of many people who shared their views on the incident. While many agreed with him, some also said that ‘standing for a minute’ during the national anthem is theater, not warranting a rebellious video on social media.
