The next generation of Apple silicon chips may be arriving sooner than previously thought — but not every Mac product will get the benefits right away. The company is expected to replace the current lineup of M2 chips with new M3 chips in the coming months.
The first showcase of the M3-powered Mac lineup is expected by at least October this year, which could include the 13-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air and 24-inch iMac. We’re also likely to see high-end MacBook Pro and Mac mini machines powered by the m3 chip – though don’t get too excited, as those probably won’t arrive until 2023.
Gizo China Quoting Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, in which he says, “It’s a sure thing that the M3 version of the Mac mini is finally coming”, but sadly, we shouldn’t expect the device to launch until late 2024.
Will the Mac mini continue to be the king of the compact desktop?
It’s thrilling to see Apple introduce a newer, more powerful chip — especially in the 24-inch iMac, which is a device desperate for an upgrade. Given how popular the M1 iMac was at launch and continues to hold up today, an enhanced chip could generate a lot of excitement for a new wave of Apple products.
The new Mac mini certainly deserves a performance boost and we’re excited at the prospect of a new version of Apple’s signature tiny computer, though I’m sad we may have to wait for that!
The M2 model got a rare five stars in our review – a statement we don’t take lightly – and the M3 version will likely be even better as current M3 leaks suggest a greater improvement in generational performance than the M1-M2. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to it — even if it doesn’t join Apple’s first wave of M3 products.
