Tina Turner, Queen of Rock’n Roll passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at the age of 83. While the veteran artiste garnered millions of fans across the world with her powerful vocals, she also featured in a few films as an actress. According to a report in Juggernaut, the late 2004 Tina Turner came close to playing the goddess Kali in a film set in ancient India. He also visited Varanasi as well as several temples in India to get inspiration for his role. He talks to Madhu Jain about his experience in India.

According to a 2010 Hindustan Times report, the Merchant Ivory film was about the supernatural. The focus was on the goddess Shakti, who could manipulate the past, present and future. It would also have explored the relationship between the goddess Shakti and three Indians and a painter, to be essayed by Matthew Modine. To prepare for his role, Turner visited India. He reportedly visited Varanasi, crossed the river Ganges, visited temples in South India and met actors, dancers and singers in the film industry.
The film could not be made due to Ismail Merchant’s sudden death after surgery. Talking about Tina, Merchant-Ivory called her a ‘goddess’.
“The film has so much energy that only Tina could have played the lead. I think he is natural; One of the greatest gifts we have received in the world of music and dance. She is a goddess in real life too.”

Though there were talks of reshoots of the film in 2010, the discussions soon fizzled out.
