New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government on Friday faced sharp reaction from opposition parties after the Reserve Bank of India announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation. The Congress dubbed PM Narendra Modi as a “self-styled godman” who “works first and thinks later”. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) made a surprise announcement on Friday that it will demonetise Rs 2,000 notes. However, the public can still deposit or exchange such notes in banks till September 30. The old party said demonetisation has come a full circle and said the Rs 2,000 note was a “band-aid” to cover up a “silly decision”. Demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
Senior party leader P Chidambaram also criticized the government and the RBI for re-introducing the Rs 500 note after demonetisation and said he would not be surprised if they do the same with the Rs 1,000 note. Karnataka Chief Minister-designate Siddaramaiah called it a desperate attempt by the BJP to divert attention from its failures.
As expected, the government/RBI has withdrawn Rs 2000 notes and has given time till 30th September to exchange the notes.
The Rs 2000 note is hardly a popular medium of exchange. We said this in November 2016 and we have been proved right
