In an effort to combat the growing threat of electronic waste (e-waste), Logitech is entering into a new partnership with iFixIt to begin offering replacement kits for key computer accessories.
Logitech claims announcement post (opens in new tab) E-waste for electronics is “fuelled by high consumption rates, short life cycles, and few repair options”. To address this, the company aims to “extend lifespan” by selling its devices first-party replacement parts (opens in new tab), Things are starting small as the only repairable products at launch will be computer mice mx master (opens in new tab) And MX Anywhere (opens in new tab) lines. Between the two series, 11 different models will be included MX Master 3S MX Anywhere 3 for Mac. So, at least, the customers will have a decent amount of options.
Spare parts “will be available as standalone or fix kits” later this summer ifixit logitech repair hub (opens in new tab), The kit will include “everything needed to complete the repair”, including all necessary tools such as a precision bit set.
what is available
The Repair Hub is currently open for the public to check out, but you can’t buy anything at this time. Replacement guides for the mice are available on the website itself; For example, the page for the Logitech MX Master mouse has instructions for carefully opening the device and cleaning it.
In the beginning, you’ll only be able to replace two parts on an MX mouse: the battery and the rubber feet on the bottom. There’s no indication whether customers will be able to replace the buttons or scrolling wheel later down the line.
Prices vary depending on which device you have. to give you an idea, fix kit (opens in new tab) Battery replacement for the MX Master, Master 2S, MX Anywhere 2, and MX Anywhere 2S costs $30. If you only want the battery, it’s $25. For MX Master 3, Master 3S and MX Anywhere 3, the kit is just $15, We should mention that every single listing comes with a notice letting you know that what you’re about to buy is a genuine Logitech part and not a third-party knock-off.
potential expansion
Even though iFixit’s program hasn’t launched yet, the company is working on expanding support to more devices. Scroll down to the bottom of the Repair Hub, you’ll see entries for Keyboard, Headphone, camera (opens in new tab)even the products logitech g series (opens in new tab), It appears that these entries are placeholders awaiting future material, however, as most page stubs (opens in new tab), People who have guides usually only focus on tweaking a few things or replace a battery Presumably, nothing with a third party part and anything directly from Logitech.
We reached out to both companies with several questions about the partnership. For example, we wanted to know when we’d see a repair kit for other Logitech devices, if indeed it’s in the works. Also, will there be more parts available later, and will it be possible to replace the mouse buttons? This story will be updated later.
