Bengaluru: After the humiliating defeat in the Karnataka assembly elections, the BJP is in the process of introspection and has decided to oust state president Nalin Kumar Kateel as the first course of action. Sources gave this information.
The party supported Kateel throughout his tenure and even former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and senior leaders had to kneel before him. The party did not give Yeddyurappa and his son BY Vijayendra any chance to take on the murderer. Sources said that the results of the assembly elections have turned their back and the high command is completely upset with them for not being able to assess the situation.
Though the BJP is showing bravery in the beginning, it is facing an existential crisis in the state. After Yeddyurappa, there is no face to project as a mass leader who can appeal to all segments of the state. Sources said the Congress has aggressively cornered the Lingayat, Dalit and OBC vote banks and is preparing the ground for the Lok Sabha polls.
The results showed that Vokkaliga Shivakumar is with OBCs, minorities and Dalits are with Siddaramaiah, and shifted to Congress with the party’s outreach to the Lingayat community. BJP is looking for tonic and momentum. As a first step towards rejuvenation, the party has decided to appoint a new face to the BJP who can appeal to the masses.
Union Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday said that the high command will decide on the leader of the opposition and also appoint a new state president of the party.
He said that Kateel’s term has come to an end. Due to the elections, the high command did not remove him. He said that now a new candidate will be appointed. The Leader of the Opposition will be decided in the Legislature Party meeting. Before this, a national leader of the party will also come here, Joshi said.
