Recently while addressing the audience at an event at IIMUN, Karan Johar expressed his personal growth as a person and filmmaker since the making of his debut film. He openly admits that he now recognizes shortcomings in its portrayal of relationships and gender dynamics. something happens, She believed that the film inadvertently propagated the wrong gender politics, a sentiment reiterated by critics over the years.
He said, “I think I have grown as a person, the first film I made, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I firmly believe that the gender politics of that film was wrong. It is propagating wrong gender politics, there is a lot of superficiality in that film. Of course, there is nostalgia that’s why you like it, but you don’t scratch the surface of the film and see that what Rahul is doing is not really what I want all Rahuls or all boys in general to do in the audience.”
Ranveer Singh, who was present at the event, jokingly interjected, “Wok zamaane mein nahi chalte kuch kuch hota hai.” Karan then replied to Ranveer’s comment and said, “No, it’s not about waking up. It’s about the dynamic shown in cinema and the film is a strong representation of how this can translate into faith today. Rahul was saying all kinds of wrong things. He got married twice. He was contradicting himself throughout the film.”
