Defending champion and world No. 1 Inga Swiatek defeated No. 6 seed Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2 in their quarterfinal encounter to return to the semi-finals of the French Open 2023.
Swiatek recorded a stunning 6-4, 6-2 victory over Gauff on Wednesday at Court Philippe Chatrier in an hour and 28 minutes. In the semifinals, Swiatek will face No. 14 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, who earlier on Wednesday defeated No. 7 seed Ons Jaboor.
Gauff, who has yet to win a set against Swiatek, kept a close tie with the top seed for most of the opening set, coming back from a break down to tie the score at four. But Swiatek turned up the heat at the end of the first set, breaking Gauff with a rally-winning forehand to win at love.
Swiatek squandered three break points while serving at 2–1 in the second set, denying Gauff an early lead. When a superb lob broke Swiatek for 4–2, the Polish player broke the set and broke Gauff once again.

“I’m very pleased to have reached the semi-finals again at Roland Garros. It’s a great achievement, no matter how the tournament ends. … I’m really happy that I can show consistency and win every game.” I can play well here for years.” Swiatek said at the post-match press conference.
“It was tighter in the first set, so I’m very happy in those crucial moments, I was the one who was solid and could put a little more pressure on Koko,” Swiatek said.
“Definitely, (Hadad Maia) is a fighter, and he showed today also that he is fighting till the last ball, it pays off,” Swiatek said. “You have to be ready even when you feel like you are on the move or whatever. You have to play 100 per cent at every point,” he added.
