Recent reports point to mediatek is preparing to release a flagship mobile chipset that could rival Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Industry rumors suggest that MediaTek’s upcoming SoC, the Dimensity 9300, will boast of four powerful Cortex-X4 cores, a feature that could be of great interest to smartphone makers.
While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has dominated the discussions so far, the Dimensity 9300 has the potential to be a game-changer. The inclusion of multiple cores enables it to perform various tasks more efficiently and at a faster rate than other SoCs.
MediaTek will use TSMC’s N4P process for the Dimensity 9300
However, Digital Chat Station on Weibo warns of potential thermal challenges for MediaTek. Despite being built on TSMC’s advanced N4P node, the Dimensity 9300 still relies on a 4nm process that can struggle with heat dissipation, especially with regard to the four Cortex-X4 cores. This “4+4” configuration, a lack of efficient cores like the Cortex-A5XX called “haze”, can affect the SoC’s cooling capabilities, especially in diverse climates and humidity levels.

Being built on TSMC’s improved N4P node could allow MediaTek to solve controlled room temperature issues, leaving the smartphone more prone to overheating when used outdoors. Furthermore, the absence of efficient cores may affect the computational performance of the device.
Naturally, the actual performance of MediaTek’s SoC will depend on its usage and testing. While it may outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 on paper, real-world results may vary greatly. Hence, MediaTek should consider testing a version of the SoC with fewer Cortex-X4 cores to get a more balanced and efficient CPU configuration.
