Stole it. The total down with five balls to spare and the hosts out of the competition.
“In the first half of the IPL, I was missing those big matches. I was getting a lot of 40s and 50s. It’s all about getting a start and turning it into a big one. Thankfully it worked out for me. Used to be.” Business ended.”
Gill said after the end of the match, “You need to keep playing shots in T20 cricket. You have to keep applying yourself, that’s important. The new ball was a bit stalled. The ball was getting wet with dew.”
Gill shared a crucial 71-ball 123 partnership for the second wicket with Vijay Shankar, who scored a quickfire 53, and revealed that he asked the all-rounder to focus on getting his timing right.
“I thought Vijay Shankar was trying too hard. I told him to keep his shape and try to time it. Once he picked up the pace, he took it very far. Hit it. I know my game… It’s important for any player to know who you are. I think we have a great bowling attack for that (Chennai) wicket (for Qualifier 1) ”
Captain Hardik Pandya was all praise for Gill for guiding Gujarat to another resounding victory in the competition. “He knows when he hits those cricket shots and bats like that, it’s a different Shubman Gill.”
“The kind of options he made and the places he was hitting, as a bowler he didn’t stand a chance. It makes him very special and gives confidence to other batsmen as well.”
Pandya also acknowledged Kohli’s knock of 101 not out and said he was happy to end the league phase on a high. “We wanted to keep the momentum going, and end on a high. We would have got 197 at the start. We should have bowled better.”
“Special innings from Virat as well. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Last year, everything went our way. This year, we were expecting people to challenge us. A lot of credit goes to all the boys.”
