Former India captain and current Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has a net worth of around Rs 1,050 crore. From the CSK franchise alone, Dhoni earns a salary of Rs 15 crore or Rs 1.25 crore per season. But there was a time in 2012 when Dhoni was hired by the owners of his franchise for a meager salary of around Rs 1.7 lakh.
The salary might not be low for any middle-class family in India, but it is definitely nothing compared to what Dhoni earns per annum. An appointment letter from India Cements Company, the owner of the CSK franchise, recently went viral again on social media. MS Dhoni’s appointment letter was shared by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi.
The appointment letter shared by Lalit Modi claims that MS Dhoni was offered the job of Vice President (Marketing) at India Cements head office in Chennai in July 2012. The contract stated that his monthly salary was Rs 43,000, which included dearness allowance of Rs 21,970 and special pay of Rs 20,000. Other aspects mentioned in the offer letter to MS Dhoni included an enhanced HRA of Rs. 20,400 while posted in Chennai; Special HRA of Rs. 8,400 per month if in Chennai. 8,000/month if outside; Special allowance of Rs.60,000 per month and finally education/newspaper expenses of Rs. 175.

In his post, Lalit Modi had expressed surprise claiming that one of the richest cricketers in the world, MS Dhoni, who led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title as well as CSK to the IPL title, would like to work under former BCCI president N Srinivasan. “It seems only in #India that contempt continues one after another by the #old #guards of @bcci – how? My best guess is #NorthBlock. But the most surprising thing is this #employment #contract of #MSD – Why? He earns 100 crores a year, will he agree to become an employee of Srini? Believe me, there are many such contracts,” Modi had mentioned in the caption of his post.
The year MS Dhoni was offered a job of Rs 43,000 per month, the same year CSK retained him for Rs 8.82 crore.
Lalit Modi had shared Dhoni’s appointment letter in 2017 with ulterior motives. CSK was banned for a few years after being found guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL.
Indian cricket faced a lot of opportunities after the IPL spot-fixing controversy. Following the Supreme Court’s Lodha Commission order, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced a ‘conflict of interest’ clause, following which several changes were made to the BCCI constitution.
By leaking this letter, Lalit Modi also wanted to point out the ‘conflict of interest’ between MS Dhoni, the BCCI and the then president of his board, N Srinivasan.
