Oppenheimer included two intimate moments involving characters played by Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh. These scenes attracted a lot of attention prior to the film’s release, as it was the first time Christopher Nolan had filmed such material. However, it appears that both the scenes were changed for Indian audiences when the film premiered on July 21.
Although the opening scene seemed to end abruptly due to the blurring of Florence Pugh’s bare back, only a few observant viewers noticed the significant change made in the later scene. Some eagle-eyed fans noticed that Florence was shown naked but covered by a “black dress”. Speculation suggests that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) may have requested this change, but no official confirmation or statement has been issued.
Oppenheimer is facing criticism in India for showing a sex scene including the Bhagavad Gita. Uday Mahurkar, representing Save Culture Save India Foundation, has issued a statement saying that the scene has hurt religious sentiments and called upon the I&B ministry to take action. The statement claimed that the film contains scenes that attack Hinduism, specifically citing a scene in which a woman asks a man to recite the Bhagavad Gita aloud during intercourse.

The statement further read, “The Foundation, on behalf of the people of this country and on behalf of the eternal tradition of life changing lives by the revered Gita, urges the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to do everything possible to uphold the dignity of the revered holy book of Hindus, punish those involved and establish procedures so that such things do not happen in the future.”
Released on July 21, Oppenheimer’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J.J. Based on Robert Oppenheimer. The film is directed, written and produced by Christopher Nolan. It stars Cillian Murphy in the lead role and features a supporting cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
