Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have etched their names in the record books by becoming the Indian opening pair with the highest partnership in a two-match Test series. The dynamic duo achieved this feat during the second Test against the West Indies at Port of Spain, where they displayed exceptional batting skills and a strong partnership.
In the first innings of the current match, Rohit and Jaiswal impressed with a brilliant partnership of 139 runs. He then produced another quickfire performance and added 98 runs in the second innings. Combining these two partnerships with an opening stand of 229 in the First Test, they scored a total of 466 runs, thus setting a new record for Indian opening pairs in a two-match Test series.
While their achievement is commendable, the record for the highest overall opening partnership in a two-match Test series is still held by Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie, who scored 479 runs in a two-Test series against Bangladesh in 2008. During that series, they also formed a historic opening partnership of 415 runs, which stands as the Test world record to this day.
While the Indian opening pair’s record for a series (more than two Tests) is held by Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan, who scored a total of 537 runs against Australia in 1979–80, the pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir follows them with 477 runs against Pakistan in 2005.
The attacking prowess of Rohit and Jaiswal was evident in India’s second innings, where they scored runs at an impressive run-rate of 8.28. It is now the second highest partnership by an opening pair for at least 50 runs. The highest run rate in such a partnership is held by Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan of England, who achieved a rate of 10 against Sri Lanka in 2002.
