According to NCA sources, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery is progressing rapidly and he is bowling five to seven overs a day at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He said that Bumrah is steadily recovering from a stress fracture in his back. He is likely to play a practice match at NCA in July. However, sources said that the timing of his return to competitive cricket cannot be predicted yet. Bumrah is working on his rehabilitation under the supervision of former India strength and conditioning coach Ramji Srinivasan.
He has been out of action since September 2022 due to his injury and also missed the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. He also missed the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, a tournament in which he represents Mumbai Indians. It is expected that he will fully recover before the ICC Men’s World Cup to be held in India from 5 October.
Bumrah had undergone lower back surgery in New Zealand in April. While fans have been waiting to see Bumrah back on the field with his unique bowling action, repeated injuries have kept him out of the team. He has attempted a comeback more than once since suffering a back injury in August last year.
Initially, the injury did not seem serious as he was named in India’s T20 World Cup squad in September and also played in the last two T20Is against Australia on September 23 and September 25 last year.
Three days later, Bumrah missed the first T20I against South Africa and it was learned that he was taken for scans, which revealed a stress-related injury to his back. He was taken to the NCA and scans confirmed that the injury was serious. This ruled him out of the T20 World Cup, in which India made it to the semi-finals.
Bumrah resumed his rehab in November and started bowling in mid-December. His progress seemed positive as he was added to the white-ball series against Sri Lanka in January, more than a week after being selected in the original squad.
Bumrah underwent match simulation exercises at the NCA, but the discomfort resurfaced in January when he took on more workload during fitness exercises. Scans revealed a fresh problem, which ruled him out of the Sri Lanka series and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
