Las Vegas-based investor Jay Bloom and his son, Sean, left the doomed Titanic expedition by Oceangate. Bloom disclosed messages exchanged on Facebook between herself and Oceangate founder Richard Stockton Rush III. The 61-year-old entrepreneur contacted Bloom to reserve a spot on the Titan submersible for herself and her son. The investor would have booked one, until his son raised serious concerns about the submersible’s safety and its impact on marine life. The chilling text was followed by a caption where Bloom revealed her meeting with Stockton Rush in March.

On March 1, 2023, Stockton Rush gives Jay Bloom a tour of the Titanic exhibit at Luxor and talks at length about the dive during their lunch break. Bloom recalls that Rush was absolutely sure of the submersible’s safety. Rush claimed it was much safer than crossing the street. Jay says that Rush actually believed everything he said but he was very wrong. Rush tried to persuade him to join the sub this year itself, but Bloom said that due to the schedule, he would not be able to join until the next calendar year.
Texts exchanged between the entrepreneurs reveal how a friend of Bloom’s son thoroughly researched the expedition’s security. According to research, the hull of the submersible could have been damaged by an attack by a sperm whale or a squid. Rush brushes off the concerns and says he is happy to have a video call with Shawn and explain the irrationality of the safety concerns.
Stockton remarked that sperm whales probably would not have been able to withstand the atmospheric pressure at such a depth. He claimed that this expedition is safer than scuba diving or even flying on a copter.

In the next messages, Stockton said that things were going well, the weather was looking forward to the next cycle. Bloom replied that he would dive into next year’s campaign, if not this year.
In his FB post, the investors write that their seats then went to the late Pakistani-British billionaire Suleman Dawood and his successor.
