Maverick author and philanthropist Sudha Murthy got really candid on The Kapil Sharma Show. His hilarious anecdotes along with commentaries on serious issues of the society at large have gained a lot of views. He spoke about meeting NR Narayana Murthy, co-founder of the Indian multinational giant Infosys. He considered Murthy as a flamboyant friend like a Bollywood hero. However, when he first opened the doors to greet her, Sudha hilariously recounts how her hopes were dashed. Nevertheless, Cupid was impressed and the couple married in 1978. They have two children, Akshata Murthy, who is married to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and son Rohan Murthy, an entrepreneur.

Currently the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and one of the trustees, Sudha Murthy tells how India’s second largest IT company, Infosys, came to be. Founded in Pune, the Bangalore-headquartered company is the fourth company in India to achieve $100 billion market cap by 2021. Infosys was founded in 1981 with an initial capital of $250 by seven engineers including NR Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani and others. It went public in 1992. The company has a global presence with centers in the US, China, the Middle East, Japan and Europe. Sudha Murthy’s husband NR Narayana Murthy was its first CEO from 1981 to 2002.

During The Kapil Sharma Show, Sudha Murthy commented that she had lent Rs 10,000 to NR Narayana Murthy in 1981 as he was setting up the company. He recalled how he lived in Bandra in the early eighties. One day Murthy announced that he was starting this software company and proceeded to give a ‘bhashan’ (lecture) about the software revolution of this country. Sudha asked how they as a middle class family would manage the capital for the startup. Narayana Murthy asks Sudha to earn for the family while he will build Infosys without earning any in the first three years.
However, Sudha Murthy had saved Rs 10,250 without Murthy’s knowledge. He had lent it to her. Sudha quips that it has been the best investment of her life. He left Rs 10,000, saving Rs 250 for emergencies.
