Having recently proved its no-logs policy despite police raids in Sweden, Mullvad once again demonstrated the robust security infrastructure offered by its VPN service.
This time it was its new search engine tool Leta, which underwent an independent review by audit firm Assured AB.
Auditors were called in to assess both the security and privacy status of the new tool. Leta found no significant problems in the review.
Mullvad’s Leta Safety Report
“Overall, Mullvad Leta is well-contained with a small attack surface, and good measures have been implemented to strengthen privacy as well as security,” the audit report said. (opens in new tab) concluded.
The auditors performed both web application penetration testing and web security reviews of Letta, the new privacy-focused Google search proxy, developed by Mullvad and available at no extra cost to all its VPN users.
They discovered a total of two low-risk privacy issues related to logging and search query caching, as well as a potential security flaw associated with Google search results, which is HTML content being presented in Leta search results.
The provider assured that it has already started work to meet the recommendations of the auditors.

There is also an option to use Leta as a default search engine with Mullvad Browser. First released on April 3, the latter seeks to provide users with all the privacy and security of the Tor browser, along with all the perks of secure VPN software.
The provider explains, “Leta aims to offer a reliable and trustworthy way to search the Internet privately.” (opens in new tab),
However, using such a tool is pointless when paired with a private web browser that blocks fingerprinting, cookies, and other web trackers.
“LATA may be useful for most people, as the above conditions can never really be met with the systems that are available today.”
This sounds even more promising when you consider that Leta’s privacy and security have finally been verified.
