New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted significant rainfall at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura over the next 5 days. “Very heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya on May 16, 18 and 19,” the forecast said. The IMD has also forecast dust storm and gusty winds for Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
On Tuesday morning, strong winds lashed areas of Delhi-NCR, causing dust and poor air quality. At 9 am, the visibility at Palam Observatory in Delhi, close to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, was 1,100 metres, down from 4,000 meters on Monday. The meteorological agency released satellite images that showed a thick layer of dust covering large parts of northwest India.
The Meteorological Department has predicted light rain or drizzle in some areas on Tuesday, which will provide much-needed respite from the heat. The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 41.3 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average, while the minimum temperature settled at 25.2 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a slight delay in the onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala and it is expected to arrive by June 4.
With a standard deviation of about 7 days, the southwest monsoon usually arrives over Kerala on 1 June.
“This year, the southwest monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to be slightly delayed. Monsoon onset over Kerala is likely to occur on June 4 with a model error of 4 days,” the weather office said in a statement.
